Am I a sports person?

I’ve recently been made aware that people don’t fully understand what we do at Excelsior Sports Therapy.  Part of this will be the fact that Myotherapy is a relatively unknown profession in Queensland.  The other part seems to be what people see as ‘sports’.  I want to make it clear that we are happy to treat people from all walks of life who may be experiencing pain or restrictions in movement.  Sports is what we specialise in but we are trained and experienced to treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions that can cause pain and decreased mobility.

Myotherapy sits between remedial massage and physiotherapy.  Remedial massage was a pre-requisite to my Myotherapy study so I have a background in massage and helping people relieve their pain through manual therapy.  Myotherapy adds a wider scope for both assessment of conditions and treatment techniques.  The regular definition of myotherapy is the evidence based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions. There is some overlap between the assessment and treatment techniques that myotherapists use and that physiotherapists use.  The big difference between myotherapy and physiotherapy is that physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat a wider range of pathologies, giving them the ability to work in hospitals.

As a sports therapy clinic, we specialise in treating athletes. This doesn’t mean that you have to be a professional athlete to come and see us. If you are doing any sort of physical activity on a regular basis we consider you a sports person, regardless of what ‘level’ you perform at. Even if you are not doing physical activity on a regular basis but you are experiencing pain and restrictions of movement we can work with you to get out of pain and move better. Our goal is for everyone to be exercising regularly because we believe that regular exercise is the best way to reduce pain and remain pain free.

Check out the Appointments page for more information about what we can treat and the treatment options that we use.
